Duffy Writer

Today my class and I went to the school hall.  We went to listen to John Pulu, who is a writer and journalist.  He was our Duffy guest speaker, and he came with Hayden from Mainfrieght.  The Mainfrieght company pays for our Duffy Books in Schools.

John writes, presents and acts for TV1 and TV2. He works on the Tagata Pasifica programme which is on Sunday mornings at 7-30am, and he also works on the Fresh progamme.  Fresh is on TV2 at 10-00am on Saturday.  It is funny show in which John wears a Pacific Island dress and a girl's blonde wig.

John comes from the Kingdom of Tonga.  He came to New Zealand when he was nine years old and he went to Otahuhu College and then later to University.   John can read and write really well.  As a child, and now as a man, he reads and writes a lot.  When John was a teenager he said to his mum that he was bored in the school holidays, and she would tell him to go and read the Bible.  His favourite book is called Harry Potter.  

As part of his job John has been overseas, including to the Pacific Islands.  He loves going back to Tonga because that is where he was born.  John's parents and his family are proud of him, and happy that he has such a good job, and is so good at reading and writing.  His family love him very much.  I think John Pulu is cool, and I would like to be a writer just like John one day when I grow up.

In The Holidays

In the holidays my whole family and I sent to the Inflatable World to celebrate my brother's and my birthday.  My other family came at 12:00, lunch time.  When my family arrived I was waiting for my friend from school.  His name is Oliver. Oliver gave me a Ninja Turtle toy and a Spider-man mask.

Then Oliver played with me.  We played a boxing fighting game.  The rules of the game are that you have to hold a big stick and you fight with someone.  


After that we went upstairs to eat.  I had chips, sausage and a savoury.  Then we had dessert.  My brother and I also had a chocolate birthday cake.  It was yum.  

After dessert we went back to the boxing.  Later my mum, my brother and I dropped Oliver home.  Then we went home.  I had a fun birthday.

Queen’s Birthday Weekend

Thank you God for the long weekend.  It was Queen’s Birthday weekend.  On the weekend I went to the cinema with my uncle and my two cousins.  First my uncle Daniel picked me up from my Grandma’s place.  Then we went to my cousins’ place.  One of my cousins is sixteen years old and the other one is nineteen years old.  My cousins are girls.  After that we drove to the cinema in my uncle’s truck.  At the cinema we watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. 

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie was about four Teenage Mutant Turtle’s.  They were all brothers.  Their names were Raph, Leo, Mickey and Donnie.  The four brothers all had different skills and characteristics.  Raph was mean and strong, Mickey was funny and silly, Donnie was smart like a scientist, and Leo was the leader of the Ninja Turtles.  The movie was very silly in a funny kind of way.  When the movie was finished we went back home and I had a fun day.

Lent

For Lent I am going to help my friends when they don't know what to do.  Also, I am going to pray for the Mission Sisters to do their work, which is is helping the orphans in Africa and in India.  And I am going to pray to God to help my family.

Going The Movies

In the holidays my dad, my brother and I went to the movies to watch Peter Pan.  First we got our popcorn, drinks and our tickets.  Next we went up the stairs and we gave the man our tickets. 

After that we went inside, where the movie was to be held.  Then we looked for our seats.  So we found our seats and then we watched Peter Pan.  The movie was on, but first they showed an advertisement.  We drank our juice and ate our popcorn.  

The movie was about a boy who went to school, and some pirates.  The pirates took the children to Neverland.  Then the pirates pushed the boy onto the plank and the boy fell off the ship.  Instead of falling into the sea the boy flew.  Everyone called him Peter Pan because he had the Pan necklace.  At the end of the movie Peter Pan got the children out of bed and took them to his friend on the pirate ship.  It was a good movie. 

On Father's Day

On the weekend my family and I celebrated Father's Day.  We celebrated Father's Day at church.  It was held at my uncle's house. When we got to my uncle's house we waited untill the church service had started.  When got inside we sang the first song and after that Father said something.  Then we sang again.  After that we listened to the first Bible reading and the second Bible reading.  Then we listened to the Gospel which Father read.

When the Gospel reading had finished we had Holy Communion. This means that they give out the bread and the wine.  The adults have the bread and the wine and the kids get blessed.  Finally, Father went to the front and we said a prayer.  Later our church service was finished.  It was fun to sing to the Lord and listen to Bible readings.  Then we all went home and played outside.

My Birthday

In the holidays my family and I went to Rainbow’s End for my birthday.  First we went to the show.  It was a magic show.  A man was wearing a night costume and a girl was wearing a fairy costume.  They told the kids to come up onto the stage to do some cool dancing.  It was a dance competition.  At the end they had to choose 3 winners.  The winners were a girl, a teenage boy and me!  We all did cool dances and I won!  They also gave me a prize.  The prize was a colouring box.  Inside the colouring box there were some flash colouring sticks. 

Next we went on the Log ride with my dad.  We went inside the log and up the slide.  At the end we slid down the slide.  We also went inside a tunnel.  The tunnel was scary, and the rest of the ride was fun and exciting.  I had a great birthday at Rainbow’s End.

Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day all of my family went to a restaurant.  At the restaurant we had lunch.  For lunch I had chips, butter chicken and potatoes.   For desert we had jelly with cream.  It was yum but a bit too cold. 

After desert my brother and I got some gifts for my mum, my aunty and my grandma.  Next we gave my mum, my auntie and my grandma their presents.  We gave them all a toaster  each.  They were really happy.  They all said thank you and they all gave us a hug.  Next we went home.  It was the best Mother’s Day ever! 

Tonga

In the holidays my family and I went to Tonga.  We went in the plane.  It was a long way but I did not go to sleep. 

When we got to the Tongan airport my uncle was waiting for us.  He had come and picked us up.  He took us to my nana’s house.    My mum’s brothers and her sister, and their families, are living in my nana’s house.  My nana is with God in heaven. 

When we arrived at nana’s house I saw my mum’s dog and I played with the puppies.   Later I went inside the house and I saw my mum’s cat. 

Then we all had lunch.  I was very hungry because it is a long way to travel to Tonga.  After that I played with my brother outside while my parents talked to the other grown-ups. 

The next day my Tongan friend and his brother came to play with me and my brother.  My friend’s name is Morie and his brother’s name is Sione.   We shared some toys inside, and then we went to have a look at the puppies and the dogs. 

I had a good time visiting my family and my friends in Tonga.

The Picnic

In the holidays my family and I went on a bus trip to the beach for a picnic.  We went with our St Joseph’s parish.

When we got to the beach we had lunch together on the grass.  We ate hotdogs and chips.  After lunch all of us kids had some ice blocks.  My ice block was green and I could drink it.  My brother had an ice block too. 

After lunch I had a swim while my Mum watched me from the sand.  There was a big wave.  Next we went back to the picnic on the grass.  Later my Dad arrived and we went back down to the beach.  My Dad arrived at 2-00 o’clock.  He had been at work.  When we got back to the beach my brother played in the sand and I went for another swim. 

When I had finished swimming we went back to the picnic and the bus came.  We didn’t catch the bus.  Instead we went home in my Dad’s car.  I had lots of fun at our St Joseph’s picnic.
