Angelina, Bryan and Oliver went to the Warehouse. They bought Jurassic World which cost $30.00 and some Lego Friends which cost $15. How much money did they spend altogether?
$30 + $15.00
= 30 + 15
= 30 + 10 + 5
= 40 + 5
= 45
The children spent $45.00
We are a Years 2 and 3 class at St Patrick's School in Auckland, NZ. We are in Room 1 and our teacher is Mrs Deeney.

Maths Addition Question
Maths Addition Questions
Summer, Harley and Anamaria went to the Warehouse. They bought some DVDs and some books. The DVDs cost $14.00 and the books cost $16.00. How much money did they spend?
First we made Tidy Ten numbers to help us answer the question.
$14 + $16
= 14 + 16
= 10 + 4 + 10 + 6
= 10 + 10 + 6 +4
= 10 + 10 + 10
= 30
The children spent $30 at the Warehouse.

Sun Bears Are Special
Why are Sun Bears special? This book answered my question.
Sun Bears are special because they have special names. They call these bears Sun Bears because their chests are coloured yellow. Sometimes Sun Bears are called by another name. They are also called Honey Bears. This is because they like to eat honey and they have very special long tongues that help them to eat honey out of bees' nests. The bears don't seem to be bothered by the bee stings.
Sun Bears come from Malaysia. They are the smallest of all the different types of bears and they are very good climbers. Sun Bears are not fussy eaters. In fact they can eat just about everything.
They even eat ice-blocks, but only on hot days. That's the same as us, We like to eat ice-blocks on hot days.

Social Studies Inquiry: The Evolution of Television
The
Evolution of Television
In
our Inquiry studies we have been looking at different ways of communicating
with each other. When we investigated
this we found that we use lots of different ways of communicating with each
other. For example we use the telephone,
emails, texts and the radio. We didn’t
have time to investigate all of them so we decided to focus on television as a
way of communication. To do this we
compared the differences between televisions in the past and compared it to
televisions now (in the present). To
help us in our Inquiry we asked ourselves several questions.
Q1. Who invented television?
Q2. What was television like when it was first
invented?
Television
was invented by many people doing lots of research, and sharing their knowledge
and ideas with each other.
In
1862 Abbe Giovanni Caselli invented a machine that transmitted one picture from
one place to another. The picture was a
simple one that did not move. Then in
1880 Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison shared a theory that outlined a
way of transmitting pictures as well as sound.
Later,
in 1990, at the World’s Fair in Paris a group of people met to share ideas and
theories about electricity. This was the
first time that the work ‘television’ had been used. Just before this Paul Nipkow invented a
mechanical television. Then in 1920 John
Logie Baird invented a television that could reflect light rather than just a
simple silhouette.
The
early televisions were black and white, so they were not very realistic. Then in the 1940’s an American man invented
colour television and in 1953 the first commercial broadcast was made and some ordinary
families got to see it.

Question 3: How and why television is used by people?
We watch television every day and our families watch television every day. We watch television to have fun and sometimes to get information about things that we are interested in. At the moment we are interested in dinosaurs and Maths. Some of us are interested in watching television because our cousin is an actress in a television programme. Our parents, our grandparents, aunties and uncles watch television to learn about the news and sometimes they watch programmes about where they come from. Our families come from all over the world such as, Africa, Austria, Cook Islands, Fiji, India, New Zealand, Philippines, Samoa and Tonga. We especially like watching television about the places that we and our families come from.

Maths Question and Our Answer
Question
B
Oliver
and Anamaria went to the shop. They
bought 5 packets of lollies altogether.
The packets of lollies cost $2.00 each.
How much did they spend?
First
we wrote our question. Then we read and
discussed our question. Next we decided
that this was a multiplication question.
We said that the numbers that we needed to solve our Maths question were
5 and 2.
Roneeza
and Mo’onia used their 2 Times Tables knowledge to solve our question. They said,
5 X
2 = 10
And
5
lots of 2 = 10
Bryan
and Angelina used their 5 Times Table knowledge to solve our question. They said,
2 X
5 = 10
And
2
lots of 5 = 10
The
rest of us used our skip counting knowledge to solve our question. We skip counted in two’s because the packets
of lollies cost $2.00 each. We said,
2,
4, 6, 8, 10,
We
concluded that Oliver and Anamaria spent $10.00 for 5 packets of lollies.

Maths Questions and Our Answers
We
are learning to Create, Read and Solve Our Class Number Stories.
We
have learnt several strategies to find the answer to our Maths questions.
First
we have to find the numbers that we are going to use to help us to answer our
question.
Then
we need to decide what kind of Maths question it is. Do we need to use addition, subtraction,
multiplication or division strategies to solve our question?
Question
A
Augustine
and Harley went to the shop. They bought
5 tubs of cold chips. The tubs of chips
cost $10.00 each. How much did they
spend?
First
we wrote our question. Then we read and
discussed our question. Next we decided
that this was a multiplication question.
Anamaria
used her skip counting knowledge to solve our question. She skip counted in ten’s because the tubs of
chips cost $10.00 each. She said,
10,
20, 30, 40,50,
Mo’onia
also used her skip counting knowledge to solve our question. She skip counted in five’s because the boys
bought 5 tubs of chips. She said,
5,
10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50,
Angelina
used another method to answer our question.
She used her Times Tables. She said,
10 X
5 = 50
So
the answer was $50.00
Bryan
used the same knowledge and he said,
10
lots of 5 is 50
So
the answer is $50
Summer
also used her Times Tables to answer the question. She said
5
lots of 10 = 50 and
5
lots of 10 = 50
So
the answer is $50.00
We concluded
that the boys spent $50.00 for 5 tubs of cold chips. This was a lot of money for cold chips so we
might go to another Takeaway shop next time.

Dinosaurs Inquiry
Dinosaurs
What
were dinosaurs like?
How
do we know what they were like?
What
happened to the dinosaurs and why?
When
we go outside to play we don’t have to worry about being eaten by
dinosaurs. When our parents go out to
work they don’t have to worry about being stomped on by dinosaurs. When we go shopping on the weekend we don’t
have to worry about being chased by dinosaurs.
This is because there are no living dinosaurs alive in the world today
Dinosaurs
lived millions of years ago. Dinosaurs
are reptiles. They came in lots of
different shapes and sizes. Some
dinosaurs had wings and could fly. Some
dinosaurs had fins and could swim. Other
dinosaurs had legs and they walked on the ground.
Dinosaur
babies hatch out of eggs. They are able
to look after themselves from the moment that they hatch. This is very different from human babies who
need their parents to feed them and look after them. Some dinosaurs eat plants, some eat meat,
some eat each other and others eat other dinosaurs’ eggs.
Then
a time came when the world got colder. Some
scientists think that this happened because a meteorite hit earth or a huge
volcano erupted. The huge explosion
would have caused dust to fill the air. The dust blocked out the sun’s light. The
earth cooled slowly. The plants that the
dinosaurs ate couldn’t grow because it was too cold for them. Many plants died out. They became extinct. Eventually there was not enough food for the
dinosaurs to eat and so the disappeared.
They became extinct.
We
know a lot about dinosaurs because scientists have studied their bones and
their fossils. The scientists sift soil
and dig deep into rocks to learn about dinosaurs. They have studied dinosaur footprints, nests
and eggs. They have even studied
dinosaur toothmarks.
We hope that you enjoyed reading about our Inquiry Topic. We learnt a lot of interesting information by doing our research.

Thank you Holy Spirit
Thank
you Holy Spirit for the joyful times in my life. My family and I had a joyful time when my
brother’s baby girl was born. She was
born on the 12th of January 2014 at the hospital.
After
she left the hospital my brother, his girlfriend and their son Isaac brought
their new baby to our house. We saw her at our home and we named her Nia
Vave. She was cute and little. She smiled up at me. They stayed at our house for two weeks. My mum bought a bed for her and some baby
clothes to wear.
After
two weeks Nia went to live at her own house with her mum and dad. They all come to visit us often. I like having them come to visit us.
Thank you Holy Spirit
Thank
you Holy Spirit for the joyful times in my life and thank you for looking after
my family. We celebrated my cousin
Luke’s birthday on the weekend. My
cousin Luke is two years old. The
celebration was at my nana’s house.
We
ate chocolate cake and I had some banana cake. My nana, my cousin Emma, my aunties Kylie,
Vanila, and Nessa made Luke’s birthday cakes.
I liked both of the cakes very much.
Then we sang Happy Birthday to Luke.
Cousin Luke clapped and smiled at us.
Later
we ate chocolate and watched TV. We
watched a DVD. It was about a baby who
made funny faces at a pig. The pig was
angry and he said that making faces at him was not funny. We all laughed and Luke laughed a lot because
he likes funny movies. We all had a good
time at Luke’s birthday celebration.

Thank you Holy Spirit
Holy
Spirit thank you for my family. This
weekend I spent time with my family. We
started to pack up our belongings again because we are moving to another house. We are moving because the next door
neighbours are not nice to us.
We
went to my auntie’s house to get some boxes to pack up our things and then we
went home. I saw my dog at my auntie’s
house. His name is Bolt. I did not know that Bolt was staying with my
auntie. Bolt had been in a bad car crash. He had been to the pet hospital and they had looked
after him. He had safety pins in him to
help him to get better. Seeing him
injured gave me a fright. My mummy said
that he has now gone to Doggy Heaven to be with God, Jesus and Mother Mary, and
other dogs. I miss him very much.
When
we got home I asked my mummy if I could start packing a box but she said that I
needed to wait because she was getting my dinner out of our freezer. I tried to pack a box on my own but I fell
into it. I was kind of doing a handstand
in the box. The box was holding me but
then I fell over. I called out to mummy
and we both laughed together.
Thank you Holy Spirit
Holy
Spirit thank you for my family and my friends.
This weekend I spent time with my family and my friends. On the weekend I played outside with my
brother and my three friends. My brother
is called Justin. I don’t know the name
of my friends. They are from the Philippines,
just like me. Our parents are friends
too.
Later
Justin and I played near the car park.
We played fake fire. We practised
our fire safety drill. We got down, we
got low and we got out of the building.
This was a practise so it was pretend, but we know what to do to stay
safe.
After
that my friends came to my house with their families. We played the game of listening to the
sound. You had to listen carefully to
the noise and try to catch the person who is making the noise. It is a good game and we all had fun. Then our visitors took a rest before they
went home. They live a long way away
from us.
Next
my family and I went to the garage because my dad had to get something. After that we went to the Syliva Park
shopping mall. At the mall we went
shopping and we had ice cream. Then we
went to Pac and Save to get my lunches for school. After that we went to Countdown and my
brother and I bought four DVDs. We got
two DVD’s each. Then we went home and
watched one of Justin’s DVDs. The DVD
was called “One, Two, Three”. It was a
cool story. This was the best day
ever. Thank you Holy Spirit for a cool
day.

Thank you Holy Spirit
Holy
Spirit, thank you for my family. This weekend
I spent time with my family. We went to
my cousin’s birthday. Her name is Rose
and she turned one year old.
We
went to a pub to celebrate Rose’s birthday.
The pub is called the ‘Zoo Keeper’s Son’. The pub had statues of animals and animal
heads are hung on the walls. There was a
Zebra head and a monkey statue.
My
cousin Richard and I hid behind the couch but my mum found us. Richard is older than me. He is seven years old. His birthday is on June 29th, so
he will be eight years old soon.
For
lunch we sat at a long rectangle table. Richard
and I had hotdogs. We had two hotdogs
each. They were not the normal
hotdogs. They were the special hotdogs
that are covered in batter. The batter
was crunchy and the hotdogs were hot.
They tasted delicious. Richard
had to order two more hotdogs because when he wasn’t looking his two sisters,
Hattie and Charlotte, stole them. I told
Richard, but his sisters had already taken a bite out of both of his
hotdogs. Nobody saw them do it. They were quick!
We
all sang Happy Birthday to Rose and we had a vanilla birthday cake. The icing was white and the whole cake was
vanilla white. There were silver
coloured balls on the cake. They tasted
delicious when I sucked them and even more delicious when I bit into them. We all had a great time at Rose’s birthday
celebration.

On The Weekend
On the weekend I played with my friend. My friend’s name is Soloman. He lives next door to me and he is older than
me. We played at my house. We played the
Mine craft game on my X-Box. We also
build a house inside my lounge. I had
fun playing with my friend.
I Am Happy
I am happy because I love my family and they love
me. I love my mum, my dad, my sister Natalia
and my brothers. My mum and dad go to
work. I go to school. I love the rest of my family too. I love my cat. I have a cool cat. Her name is Casey. She is yellow and pink. She likes to eat cat food and she likes
playing with me.
I am happy because I have friends at school. I like
to be with my friends at school. I like
the book that I and my reading group are reading at the moment. It is called “Nowhere and Nothing”. The book is about a little boy. I like the story because the little boy sits
on the door step and he plays with his friends.
Sometimes the little boy goes to the park. So he does have somewhere to go and something
to do. He has his friends to play with
and the park to go to.
Ready Steady Go
Ready
Steady Go is our physical education (PE) programme for Term 2. Nicola is our Ready Steady Go coach. She comes to us on Thursday afternoons. If the weather is sunny we do our PE at the
bottom court behind Rooms 7 and 8. If it
is raining we go to Room 5. Room 5 is
empty at the moment.
Yesterday
was Thursday but it was raining, so we had to have our PE lesson inside Room 5. That was OK because Room 5 is big and we have
lots of room to run around in.
When
we arrived in Room 5 Nicola was already waiting for us. She had lots of balls and other PE equipment for us to use. First we greeted Nicola by welcoming her to
St Patrick’s School. Next we sat quietly
and listened to Nicola’s instructions.
After
that we played a warm up game called “Happy Hats and Sad Hats”. The hats were not real hats, Nicola used
cones instead. Before we started Nicola
had turned half the hats on their sides.
These were called the Sad Hats.
The hats that were still standing up were called the Happy Hats. One team was called the Happy Hats and the
other team were called the Sad Hats. If
you were in the Happy Hat team you had to run around and pick up all of the sad
cones making them happy cones. If you
were in the Sad Hat team you had to knock the cones over making them sad
hats. Both teams were very fast and we
had a lot of fun playing this warm up game.
Then
we were split into four teams. We
practiced our throwing and catching skills.
We got better and better at catching and throwing the ball to each
other. Nicola said that we had done a
good job. Nicola, Mrs Foden and Miss
Craig helped us with our ball throwing and catching skills too.
Next
we played “Piggy in the Middle” in our teams.
We had to throw the ball to the person at the back while the person in
the middle had to try to catch it. The
person in the middle had to jump sometimes to catch the ball. We laughed a lot as we got better and better
at throwing and catching the ball.
Then
it was almost home time so we said our going home prayer together, and thanked
Nicola for teaching us PE. We also said
goodbye to Nicola and we’ll see you again next Thursday.

On the Weekend: A Narrative
On the weekend I went to my nana’s house because our
house had a fire. When the fire happened
my family was trapped in our bedrooms. I
was the only one who was not trapped. I
got down, I got low and my cat Rocky followed me. Rocky moved slowly because the fire was in
front of him. So he moved to the
side. I got to the phone and I dialled
111 and asked for the fire brigade.
The fire brigade man told Rocky and I to go and stand at
our letterbox outside. He told us to
crouch down to get out of the house because the fire was above us. When we got outside we ran to the
letterbox.
Then the fire engine arrived and they hosed our house
with water and got my family out of the house.
Next the ambulance arrived to look after my mum because her arm was a little
bit burnt. My dad had a little burn on
his leg. The ambulance people looked
after my mum and dad. They are all
better now.
It was a busy night and we were all very tired. Because our house had been burnt down we all
slept at my nana’s house. She was
pleased that we were all OK and so was I.
Queen’s Birthday Weekend
On the weekend I went to my auntie’s house with my sister
Maraya. It was a sunny day. We played with my cousin. My auntie’s name is auntie Cinta and my
cousin’s name is Mercy. We played tag
outside, around the house. We ran very
fast.
Then we went inside to eat. First we said our prayers and then we ate our
food. I ate cereal with milk. My cousin, my sister and I put strawberries
on our cereal. It tasted like rice
bubbles.
After that my aunty took us all to the swimming
pools. I swam with my cousin and my
sister. We played splashing our faces.
My cousin swam under the water and she tried to tag my feet. I was
ticklish. Later we all went on the playground.
There were lots of things to play on the playground. I played driving and my cousin and my sister
played ball. I had a brilliant time at
the pools.

On the weekend I went to the swimming pool with my mum
and my brother. My brother’s name is
Christian. First we changed into our
swimming togs at home. Then we all
walked to the swimming pools. The pools
are close to our home. At the pool my
brother and I had a long swim.
The water was warm and it had a lot of chlorine in
it. The chlorine helps to keep the water
clean. There were lots of people at the
pool so it was good to have some chlorine in the water.
I did a bomb dive and then I swam to the other side of
the pool. I made a big splash. I used a flutter board. Christian and I kept throwing it around and
then swimming after it. The first one to
get the flutter board was Christian. He can swim faster than me. Christian was swimming when I was still in my
mum’s stomach, before I was born. I
almost bombed Christian but not quite. I
didn’t swim to the very end because the pool is very long. I had a fantastic time swimming at the
pools.
