Climate Change and Tuvalu

Climate Change and Tuvalu

Key Terms
Global Warming
Climate Change

In Room 1 we have been studying Climate Change.
We have found out that some things that we are doing are causing the atmosphere around the earth to change.

The Earth’s climate is slowly getting warmer.  This is called Global Warming.  Global Warming is causing the ice to melt and the oceans to rise.

Because of this low lying Islands, like Tuvalu, are becoming covered in sea water.  The houses in Tuvalu are being flooded, and so the Tuvalu people are having to move to new countries.

We think that this is very sad.

Key Phrases
Cows
Poisonous methane gas
Sewage seeps into our waterways

When the cows eat and digest grass they fart poisonous methane gas and they pooh.  The methane gas goes into the air and causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also the cow pooh goes into the grass and pollutes our rivers and the sea.  This causes the fish to get sick and die.

Key Phrases
Tractors
Poisonous carbon dioxide gas
Chemical sprays

Farmers use their tractors to plough the land before they plant their crops.  If they have cows they plant grass.  They also use their tractors to spray chemicals over the grass to help it to grow.

The tractors give off poisonous carbon dioxide gas.  The gas goes into the air and causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  Then this causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also the chemical sprays pollute our rivers and the sea.  This causes the fish to get sick and die.

Key Phrases
Trees being cut down
Trees being burnt
Leading to deforestation
And so making no more oxygen

In many parts of the world trees are being cut down to make room for new houses and to build roads and motorways.  Also in many countries whole forests of trees and jungle are being burnt down to make room to grow food for us to eat.

When we burn trees and wood they release poisonous carbon dioxide gas into the air.  When this happens it causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also here is another important fact.  Trees need carbon dioxide gas and sunlight to live and they use this to make oxygen.  Do you know what this process is called?  It is called photosynthesis.

We need oxygen to breath so it is important that we have lots of trees.  If there are not enough trees to turn poisonous carbon dioxide gas into healthy oxygen we will all cough a lot and get very sick.

Key Phrases
Factories,
Smoke emissions,
Chimneys

Factories and power plants release smoke and a variety of poisonous gases from their chimneys.  Sometimes the poisonous smoke and gas is so thick that it smothers the earth.

This causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu

Also, lots of people have to breathe it in and it makes them cough a lot and they get very sick.

Green Table:  Noah, Eli, Matthew
Key Phrases
Cars, motorways
Exhaust,
Carbon emissions smother the earth

Most of the vehicles that we drive on our roads and motorways, such as cars and trucks, give off poisonous exhaust fumes.  These exhaust fumes are poisonous gases.

This causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu

Also in places where there are lots of vehicles driving around their poisonous gases make people cough and get very sick.
